“Farraday had to be telling the truth,” Meredith said. “Those were movie creatures.” She tugged back her hair and tied it with a rubber band. Then she dropped onto the grass beside my cabin.

“Well ... I never saw those guys in any movie,” Tyler argued. “And it didn’t look like costumes. They were breathing!”

“If they were just movie monsters, why did Farraday get so angry?” I asked. “Why did he threaten Tyler and me?”

The four of us had hurried away as fast as we could. Of course we never even mentioned Duffy and the Spin-and-Scream.

And now we settled in the shadow of my cabin, trying to calm down, and trying to make sense of what we saw.

The afternoon sun was slowly sinking behind the trees. I could hear happy shouts and cries from swimmers down at the lake.

“If they were just actors in costumes,” Tyler said, “why were they chained to the wall? Why did —”

“Why were they screaming?” Meredith interrupted.

“Yes. You heard those screams,” her sister added. “They sounded so real. They didn’t sound like pretend screams.”

“And why was Mr. Farraday so red and out of breath?” Meredith demanded.

I shrugged. “Beats me. I can’t answer any of those questions.”

“It’s all so weird,” Tyler murmured.

“Everything about this place is weird,” Elizabeth replied. “It’s a fright camp, right? I mean, we shouldn’t believe anything we see. It’s all just supposed to be scary fun.”

“That’s right,” I sighed. “But when does the fun start?”
